THUNDER BAY – New financial projections indicate the City of Thunder Bay could reduce its pandemic-related losses to just over $2 million in 2021, significantly below earlier estimates.
All told, the city is projected to finish the year about $3 million ahead of estimates in the 2021 budget, says a quarterly financial variance report from city treasurer Linda Evans. The report updates the budget s financial projections based on information from the first quarter of the year.

Strathcona County could benefit greatly from this week’s federal budget.
On Monday, April 19, the federal Liberals tabled a $101 billion budget, which promised a plan for national child-care, business supports, and post-pandemic recovery projects.

“No surprise, it was stimulus budget. For the times, there has to be some stimulus,” Mayor Rod Frank said in reaction. “There are a lot of people who are hurting due to COVID. There are people on both sides of the coin whose health is at risk and others who have their livelihoods at risk, so the government had to address that. In the longer term, we’re going to have to look at the deficit and debt side, but that will be in a future budget.”
