The Pittsburgh Steelers offseason and especially their 2021 NFL Draft class reek of a team desperate to avoid going under .500 rather than a team with a plan for rebuilding after quarterback Ben Roethlisberger s decomposing husk finishes bleeding the team of another $41 million.
A play for the collective egos of head coach Mike Tomlin, general manager Kevin Colbert as well as Roethlisberger as opposed to an accurate evaluation of where the team really is may end up going more harm than good for the long term vision of the Steelers.
Great news for the rest of the AFC North and particularly the Cleveland Browns, but an unsettling reality for the Pittsburgh Steelers, who have dominated the division for touching on five decades.
In a recent episode of the Stat Geek podcast, I tackled the question posed to me about if the Steelers specifically looked to draft players who were larger than the players they would possibly be replacing. While larger is not always better when it comes to specific positions, it was interesting to see how the height and weight of the Steelers draft picks compared to players who were recently with the Steelers or who they would be fighting for playing time on the 2021 roster.
The biggest issue in tackling the question was getting a correct height and weight for the newly drafted players. With no NFL combine this spring, getting an accurate measurement was not the easiest task. Rather than trying to compile the information myself in order to get the best data, I decided to trust another source who hopefully did the job for me. Therefore, all heights and weights of every player listed are coming directly from Pro Football Reference and their player profiles.

The Pittsburgh Steelers now turn their focus to the 2021 regular season and offseason workouts, but the work for the 2021 NFL Draft class is just beginning. With rookie minicamp just around the corner, it is worth the time checking to see what coaches said about the selections.
For the Steelers’ second round pick they took Pat Freiermuth out of Penn State. Following the pick newly hired tight ends coach Alfredo Roberts spoke to the media about the newest acquisition to his position group, and what he feels Freiermuth can bring to the Steelers.
“He is exciting to me. I am excited to work with him.” Roberts said. “Had a chance to work with him at his Pro Day. The energy he exudes, he is a serious but fun guy. He has some position flexibility. He will be kind of a throwback tight end because he can play the position and do some multiple things. You can flex him out. His positional flexibility is going to give us a chance to do a lot of differen
And you thought the Steelers were done taking receivers early in the draft.
For the fifth-straight spring, the Steelers took a pass-catcher on Day 2 of the annual player-selection extravaganza last weekend. But instead of a wide-out, Pittsburgh selected Penn State tight end Pat Freiermuth in the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft.
If you’re a Steelers fan, you may have felt like many of the spectators who attended the event in person and were perhaps ready to cheer for that center from Oklahoma when the legendary Franco Harris stepped to the podium to announce the 55th selection.
Only, instead of immediately breaking out in a loud celebration, you may have had to pause first while processing the fact that Pittsburgh skipped over one huge need in favor of another.
