UN envoy on Myanmar condemns bloodshed
The UN secretary-general s special envoy on Myanmar has condemned the continued violence of the country s security forces against protesters as the number of casualties grows.
Christine Schraner Burgener released a statement on Sunday after the forces gunned down dozens of people protesting the February coup over the weekend.
Local media say at least 30 citizens were killed on Saturday and Sunday. The death toll since rallies began last month is believed to have topped 100.
The envoy said she strongly condemns the continuing bloodshed in the country as the military defies international calls, including from the Security Council, for restraint, dialogue and full respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms.
Survey: 3,000 nurses died of COVID-19 in the world
A survey by an international federation of nurses associations suggests that about 3,000 nurses have died from the coronavirus across the globe.
The International Council of Nurses has published results of the survey about the situation nurses are in across the globe. The publication comes one year after the World Health Organization declared the coronavirus outbreak a pandemic.
The council says it has recorded nearly 3,000 COVID-19 deaths among nurses in 60 countries. But it says the true figure is likely much higher, citing a lack of data in many countries.
The council also says large numbers of nurses are leaving the profession due to such factors as burn-out and stress.
