US keeps quiet about its plans for nuclear arms deployment, says Zakharova

US keeps quiet about its plans for nuclear arms deployment, says Zakharova The Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman said that US arms control-related charges against Russia were devoid of any foundation and merely served as a cover for Washington’s own destructive actions © Russian foreign Ministry press service/TASS MOSCOW, April 21. /TASS/. Washington intentionally keeps quiet about its plans for the deployment of new nuclear weapon systems, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said in a commentary on Wednesday following the release of the US Department of State’s report entitled 2021 Adherence to and Compliance with Arms Control, Nonproliferation, and Disarmament Agreements and Commitments.

This Would Be A Good Time for An Open Skies Treaty Overflight

This Would Be A Good Time for An Open Skies Treaty Overflight Verse of the week: “I come into the peace of wild things who do not tax their lives with forethought of grief. I come into the presence of still water. And I feel above me the day-blind stars waiting with their light. For a time I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.” Wendell Berry, “The Peace of Wild Things” Vladimir Putin is behaving badly again. He’s massing troops and equipment near Russia’s border with Ukraine, a border he previously breached in 2014. The last time he upped the ante, in December 2018, Washington demonstrated its solidarity with Kiev by carrying out an “extraordinary,” short-notice overflight allowed under the provisions of the Open Skies Treaty. Canadian, French, German, Romanian and British observers accompanied U.S. personnel, as permitted under the Treaty’s ride-sharing option.

State Department memo suggests Biden hesitant to rejoin Open Skies Treaty: report

However, the memo obtained by Defense News suggests the Biden administration might not rejoin the treaty. “While we recognize that Russia’s Open Skies violations are not of the same magnitude as its material breach of the INF Treaty, they are part of a pattern of Russian disregard for international commitments in arms control and beyond that raises questions about Russia’s readiness to participate cooperatively in a confidence-building regime,” the memo reportedly reads, referring to the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty. The State Department has said the administration is studying the issue of returning to the treaty. Defense News noted that the State Department said in a statement earlier this week that a final decision has not yet been made regarding the treaty, leaving the status unclear.
