Financiers back Qld’s biggest battery energy storage system

Ashurst and DLA Piper have advised on the financing of Vena Energy’s Wandoan South Battery Storage System in Australia.

Deal: Global law firm Ashurst has acted for Vena Energy on obtaining debt financing for the development of the Wandoan South Battery Energy Storage System (Wandoan South BESS) near Wandoan, Queensland. Vena Energy is a prominent and leading renewable independent power producer in the Asia-Pacific region.
DLA Piper advised BNP Paribas, DBS Bank and ING Bank N.V. on their financing of Vena Energy’s new project. All three banks were joint mandated lead arrangers for the Wandoan South BESS, which reached financial close on 14 December 2020.

Vena Energy-Australia has named Doosan GridTech as its engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) partner to build Queensland’s largest energy storage system. This battery energy storage system (BESS) will play a major role in improving grid stability and supporting the state’s shift to renewable energy. Located near Wandoan in the state’s southwest region, the BESS will have a discharge capacity of 100MW and deliver 150MWh enough to provide power for 57,000 homes.

Vena Energy Australia has achieved financial close for its 100MW / 150MWh Wandoan battery energy storage system (BESS) project in Queensland and named Doosan GridTech as engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) partner.
The local arm of Singapore-headquartered independent power producer (IPP) Vena Energy, focused on renewable energy projects in wind and solar across the Asia-Pacific region, signed a 15-year contract for operational dispatch rights to the Wandoan project with major Australian utility AGL, announced towards the beginning of this year.
Vena Energy said this morning that it has now achieved financial close for what will be the Australian state of Queensland’s largest battery project so far. ING Australia says it will financing the Wandoan big battery in Queensland, the biggest project of its type in Queensland and the first battery project that it has financed in Australia.
The 100MW and 150MWh Wandoan battery energy storage system (BESS) is being developed by Vena Energy Australia and will be operated under a 15-year contract by major energy utility AGL – one of a number of big battery projects that it is building or contracting around the country’s main grid.
Th $120 million battery is due to come into operation next year and is the first part of a major solar and battery storage hub being planned for the Wandoan South project, where Vena plans to build up to 650MW of large scale solar and 450MW of battery storage capacity.
