A 22-year-old native of Marshfield in rural Washington County, the Colby senior is the driving force behind Waterville Junior High School’s Coding Club, combining her academic interests and passion for working with children as an O’Hanian-Szostak Fellow for Civic Leadership.

The February art kit is inspired by Bryan’s award-winning book, “Beautiful Blackbird,” a copy of which will be included in each art kit, according to a news release Shannon Haines, president and CEO of Waterville Creates.

Waterville Creates Offers Free Art Kits In Honor Of Black History

According to a story by WABI, and in honor of Black History Month, Waterville Creates has teamed up with Colby College Museum of Art, Kennebec Montessori School, Waterville Public Schools and the Family Violence Project, to created a special Art Kit for everyone to celebrate the artwork and legacy of Maine artist, Ashley Bryan. Ashley Bryan is an American artist, writer, and illustrator of children’s books, and the majority of his subjects are derived from the African-American experience. Waterville Creates President, Shannon Haines says: “His captivating storytelling and vivid collage work make his books a treat for all ages, and it is our hope that these art kits will inspire families to not only read and create together but also to learn more about Bryan’s work.”

Luminaries light up Waterville on the winter solstice Last week, Waterville Creates! distributed 1,600 luminary kits to the Waterville Public Library and students in the Waterville Public School District to build and display on Monday night. Share To celebrate the winter solstice and to shine a light in this darkest of days, local public school students and staff at the Waterville Public Library created luminaries with free art kits 1,600 of them provided by Waterville Creates!. “We really wanted it to be something that would connect people to each other,” Serena Sanborn, education and outreach coordinator for Waterville Creates!, said during a phone interview Monday.
