IT Carlow and WIT make joint application for new South East university

Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, Simon Harris TD has today (Friday) confirmed he has received an application from Waterford Institute of Technology and IT Carlow, seeking to establish a technological university in the South East under the prescribed legislative requirements of the Technological Universities Act 2018.
The joint application seeks the establishment of a new university. This would be subject to the applicant institutes meeting the eligibility criteria set out in the 2018 Act and the various requirements to which the Minister must have regard in his role as legislative decision-maker on the application.

Grandparents’ wisdom is being embraced by a 23-year-old west Cork farmer, who recently graduated from Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT) with a degree in agricultural science.
Nicole Keohane farms in Innishannon, alongside her grandparents, John and Anne Keohane.
“We run a dairy enterprise comprising just shy of 100 cows over a 40ha land base,” she said.
“I’m quite lucky to be surrounded by the wealth of knowledge they have built over the decades, and to this day I am still learning from them. I have two siblings – soon to be three – but neither of them have ever taken any interest in the farm as they have found their own passions,” said Nicole.

An application to form a technological university for the South-East has been submitted to higher education minister Simon Harris.
Waterford Institute of Technology and IT Carlow have applied for the new designation, with the entity to be established by January 1, 2022, if successful.
