THE VACCINE
Timing of the rollout is not entirely in our hands
When any organisation sets up a process to achieve an objective (such as vaccine procurement and delivery) many issues help or hinder success.
The first and most critical is some steps are totally under the process teamâs control and others arenât at all. The manufacture and timelines for delivery to our country we have no control over. We have influence, i.e. ordering, quantities asked for and delivery timelines, but we have no control over these being met. Rain is on my mind, or lack thereof. Across Southern California, the season’s rainfall is less than half of normal. That portends a dry spring and summer challenging for gardens and for us gardeners.
Gardens around us
This year’s wildflower bloom was minimal sort of making up for the fantastic bloom back in 2019. Home gardens, though are putting on a good show. Some garden clubs are slowly restarting their annual spring garden tours. Mission Hills Garden Club’s wonderful annual May Garden Walk is happening, with advanced ticket sales and set start times to space people out. Visit missionhillsgardenclub.org to purchase tickets.

COVID-19
Fix quarantine system, then resume the flights
Plans are afoot to accept international arrivals into Melbourne again (The Age, 6/3). But what has changed? Despite the Coate inquiry, we are still hearing about breaches in quarantine hotels, quarantine staff working across several venues, inadequate training and personal protective equipment, and communication lapses (The Age, 6/3). The contact tracing system is still not working consistently. And has ventilation in the quarantine hotels been audited?

Rain! We had rain! Most of the county got close to an inch on Wednesday, some inland valleys and the mountains got even more. Our gardens perked up, and surely the rain will bring late blooms to the desert, if not the backyard. But we are still woefully short for this rain season so keep up with your waterwise ways.
Vegetable and annual flower gardens
Take my online seed-starting workshops to learn how to start seeds for your favorite summer veggies, herbs and flowers. It’s easy and fun! For information and to register, visit www.WaterWiseGardener.com.
Start seeds now for summer vegetable crops: okra, tomato, peppers, eggplant, basil, etc. In six or eight weeks, the seedlings will be large enough to transplant into your garden, just as the soil warms up.
