Drama for Glasgow residents (and budgies) when tenement roof collapsed

ALL in a day’s work for a Glasgow firefighter, back in 1969. A dramatic tenement roof collapse had resulted in the stairwell filling with rubble and blocking the escape route for all 25 residents (plus two budgies). It was on Scott Street in Garnethill, and luckily, no-one was injured. Even those on the ground floor had to come out of their windows as the debris had blocked their doors. No-one knew what had caused the collapse, but it came just over a year after the great storm which had hit the city, killing nine people and leaving hundreds more homeless. This tenement had been damaged then, so it was assumed it had been weakened and never quite recovered.

One eastbound lane will remain open during construction and pedestrian access will be allowed throughout the project. Share:
