In December 6, 1949, the Israeli cabinet convened for its weekly meeting. The previous day, Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion had dropped an international bomb by declaring Jerusalem to be Israel’s capital. But there were other items on the agenda now. One was the appointment of a new Supreme Court justice.
Only five justices then served on the highest court in the land. The court’s president was Justice Moshe Zmoira. The minister of justice who appointed him, Pinchas Rosen, had previously been Zmoira’s partner in a law firm. Rosen, who like Zmoira was German-born, led the small Progressive Party. Back then, the prime minister did not attach great importance to the justice portfolio.

Palestinian singer, Faraj Suleiman, has released an album in collaboration with the novelist, and songwriter Majd Kayyal. Titled “
Better than Berlin,” the album was initially livestreamed on Facebook and then released on various platforms, including Soundcloud and Spotify. Its songs grapple with the conundrums that undergird the Palestinian realities in contemporary Haifa. It covers a wide range of topics from love, migration, the city, gentrification, marriage, to the “monster” that continuously reproduces the city. The album includes eleven songs, and though the wide majority of the songs are sung by Suleiman, there are two songs, namely “Melodies No More” and “Tasteless,” that bring in other characters and artists, including Shaden Qanboura, Sama’ Wakim, Wa’el Wakim, and Henri Andraous.

The Balfour protests helped to topple Netanyahu. But at what cost?
Even if the next government is worse, the anti-Bibi protests show that when enough people mobilize around a single message, they have a chance to win.

A single slogan can summarize the anti-Netanyahu protests that have been taking place across Israel over the last half year: “It won’t end until Netanyahu goes.”
Netanyahu may not have quit, but the Knesset effectively decided to fire him on Tuesday night when it refused to give him more time to pass the annual state budget, thus dissolving itself. New elections the fourth round in less than two years will take place on March 23, 2021.
