Aspen Times editorial board
While we are certain the city of Aspen was well-intentioned with visions of reducing our carbon footprint and minimizing crowds, after spending the Fourth of July holiday downtown we hope those in charge concluded the same thing we did: bring back the traditional parade.
The Aspen Times participated in this year’s community event, and along with connecting with some of our readers we gave away 300 Paradise Bakery cookies, as well as 300 Otter-Pops, countless balloon animals to kids and let everyone know about our 140th birthday party Aug. 26 at the Aspen Historical Society.
We published a nice feature story about how the crowds flocked to downtown and a great slideshow of photos from the entire day, and we did our annual Facebook Live from the Fourth celebrations.
The Red Ant
With the lockdowns over and summer tourism season in full swing, for no good reason the City of Aspen has canceled one of our most cherished traditions, the old-fashioned Fourth of July parade. A year ago, this may have been necessary, but today it is nothing but a cop-out by the hyper-controlling overseers of Aspen’s nanny-state, intent on micro-managing us because they are certain they know best.
In its place, Aspen is hosting a “stationary parade” that “re-imagines” our small-town tradition as what can only be described as a trade show, featuring booths and interactive exhibits, six feet apart, throughout 12 blocks of the downtown core that will be closed to vehicle traffic.
Staff reports
Planned street closures in Aspen for the 2021 annual Old Fashioned Fourth of July Parade, which this year will be stationary with the crowds walk along the closed streets.

The 2021 edition of Aspen’s Fourth of July festivities comes with a big twist with the “stationary parade.“ The annual children’s bike parade is on, but the decorating location this year is in Wagner Park.
The “parade” is set for 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and streets in downtown Aspen will be closed as visitors will be moving and the floats and vendors staying put.
