HEALTH REFORMS
Editor
Barbara Fountain has put together this handy to A to Z of Andrew Little s health sector reforms
A:
Andrew Little became health minister in November 2020, following re-election of the Labour Party to government in the October general election. Mr Little indicated he would be going further with reform than was recommended by the Health and Disability System Review Panel led by Heather Simpson. On 21 April 2021, he announced major changes to the system, including the ditching of DHBs and the creation of a powerful Māori Health Authority.

THERE IS NOTHING WRONG with being bold, the real trick is to be bold about the right things. Is âHealth New Zealandâ (HNZ) the right thing? Labour supporters are saying it is with a suspicious degree of vehemence. (The sort of vehemence usually reserved for the defence of a dear friend who has done something that we all know, deep down, is really, really stupid.)
Meanwhile, the National Party has promised to repeal the legislation setting up HNZ the moment itâs re-elected. For good measure, theyâre labelling the proposed Maori Health Authority (MHA) âseparatistâ.
So, there you have it. This âboldâ reformation of New Zealandâs health system will proceed without the slightest hint of bi-partisan consensus. Excellent.
