The new kids on the Rotary Club scene say they are making a dent in youth mental mental issues in the Mackay region.
The female heavy Northern Beaches Rotary Club paired up with mental health organisation Headspace to sponsor two youth mental health first aid courses this year with another planned for May.
Mental health first aid teaches responders to help people who may be experiencing a mental health problem or crisis.
Often this can include depression, anxiety, psychosis, panic attacks and suicidal thoughts or behaviours.
Club president Toni Slattery said the program was tailored to responses for youths aged 12 to 25 and was developed for adults who worked and volunteered with youth.

A 27-step action plan has been devised to cater for Mackayâs growing population and transport needs by road, rail, sea and air. The Mackay Region Integrated Transport Strategy outlines actions to be taken immediately, those over the next five years and long-term actions covering the period 2025 to 2036.
âAs a multi-modal strategy, MRITS considers the current and future role of the more traditional transport modes such as planes, trains, (cars), boats, pedestrians and bikes as well as those that are emerging and are perhaps a little less well-known such as rideshare and personal mobility devices, for example e-scooters,â the draft strategy posted to Mackay Regional Councilâs website stated.
