What s in a name? For Walkerston, it s all Scrubby

It s an unwritten rule that the longer you live in a town, the more you become an authority on the unofficial things such as nicknames. Universally accepted and rarely challenged, those nicknames are generally passed down through generations or are changed as the population does. For Walkerston, the nickname Scrubby has been around for - well, long-term resident Ray Hamilton says forever . A recent caller to the Daily Mercury took exception to referring to Walkerston by the moniker so when My Town headed to the Wests Mackay Leagues Club this week, we asked a handful of residents what they thought.

Named: Priority projects our pollies want to deliver in 2021

Dawson MP George Christensen and Mackay MP Julieanne Gilbert have revealed to the Daily Mercury their wishlist of major projects on the agenda for 2021. George Christensen: - Action from government on North Queensland insurance crisis What I m looking for in the (federal) budget, which will be delivered in May, is a commitment to establish a reinsurance pool that will help defray the cost of cyclone insurance in North Queensland, Mr Christensen said. I think that s achievable, but it s just going to mean a lot of work and lobbying to get that. - Funding for Urannah Dam Mr Christensen noted this project had received support from both the state and federal governments.

Walkerston design flaw accident waiting to happen

A potentially fatal flaw in a $150 million road safety upgrade could be putting farmers and fellow motorists in danger. Canegrowers Mackay has said the Walkerston Bypass Access project had an intersection that was an accident waiting to happen . Chairman Kevin Borg said the designs would force large cane farming vehicles to use a staggered T-intersection to traverse the Walkerston Bypass in both directions. Mr Borg said an investigation by engineers on behalf of growers had found the road design failed to consider the increased volume of farm traffic at harvest season, from June to December. In the six-month crushing period alone, an estimated 220 trips per day, 22 vehicles per hour, will use the intersection to cross the bypass, Mr Borg said.
