Credit: Stephen Clark / Spaceflight Now A decade in the making, the core stage for NASA’s first Space Launch System heavy-lift rocket rolled into the Vehicle Assembly Building at the Kennedy Space Center Thursday to join up with twin solid rocket boosters and an Orion capsule for an unpiloted test flight around the moon.

Photo: Boeing The final piece of NASA’s next moon rocket was unloaded Thursday at Kennedy Space Center ahead of an uncrewed launch to the moon and back later this year. The core stage of NASA’s Space Launch System, or SLS, rocket arrived by barge earlier this week after undergoing testing in Mississippi. The 212-foot tall, 188,000 pound booster will help lift NASA’s Orion space capsule, designed to take future human missions to the moon. The two solid rocket boosters that help lift the massive rocket have already been assembled and the capsule is undergoing its final checkouts before mating with the rocket.

Credit: Theresa Cross / Spaceflight Insider The core stage for NASA’s Space Launch System rocket arrived at Kennedy Space Center in Florida for the uncrewed Artemis 1 Moon mission, scheduled for later this year. Then on April 29, under cloudy skies that gave way to a beautiful sunrise and morning, the core stage began its final journey to the Vehicle Assembly Building for final preparations and stacking. When ready, the core stage will be integrated with the twin five-segment solid rocket boosters, which were recently stacked on the Mobile Launcher in the VAB. This’ll be the first integrated mission of the Orion spacecraft and the SLS.
