From a country town to a booming suburban hub, one of the biggest battles on Western Australia s election day is set to play out in Byford one of the fastest-growing areas in Australia.

About 50 kilometres south-east of Perth, in the seat of Darling Range, the town of Byford has tripled its population in the past decade.

Western Australian Premier Mark McGowan has unveiled a $259 million renewable energy policy which would see 1,000 standalone power systems made and installed in the state.
The Labor party policy would also see the manufacturing of wind turbines as well as e-waste banned by 2024.
“This is embracing renewable power and manufacturing in a responsible, achievable and affordable way,” Mr McGowan said.
This comes as the WA Liberal Party continues to promote its New Energy Jobs plan which aims to close state-owned coal-fired power stations by 2025 - a move which has concerned federal Liberal members.

Western Australian Opposition Leader Zak Kirkup has insisted the March election remains winnable for the Liberals, rubbishing fears his party is headed for an electoral disaster.

The Opposition leader also pledged a surplus each year if elected in March
And, in an interview with the ABC to mark the official start of the campaign on Wednesday, Mr Kirkup also hit back at claims he was making unaffordable spending promises, insisting he could present a bold vision while keeping the state budget in surplus.
