Baldor Specialty Foods has launched a Peak Season Box available for home delivery.
Baldor says the box contains the best of the company’s peak season fruits and vegetables. Each week, it will scout and sample seasonal produce items arriving at Baldor to determine the best candidates for the boxes.
From there, Baldor will assemble a box of five to eight peak items, which will be local whenever possible, and may include produce otherwise only available in wholesale sizes. Because these are sometimes beloved and hard to find specialty items, each box will be available in limited amounts only.
Each week a new box will be released.

Baldor Specialty Foods, one of the largest wholesale importers and distributors of fresh produce and specialty foods in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions, has teamed up with New York City caterer Great Performances to bring consumers a twist on traditional game day fare. It was last November, Mark Mavilia says, when he and three friends in Washington, D.C. rendezvoused for dinner at Ghibellina’s, an Italian gastropub in Logan Circle “specializing in Neapolitan-inspired pizzas and craft cocktails,” says the online restaurant guide “Popville.”
Hold the pizza! Mavilia, who is art director at the Association of American Medical Colleges, couldn’t wait to tuck into the pasta-bolognese, his favorite dish. “In my opinion,” he says, “it’s the best in the city.”
Or rather was the best. When the foursome assembled outside the restaurant, they were disappointed to find Ghibellina’s had closed. “They had shut down for good,” Mavilia says, adding: “It was not boarded up. Just a note on the door thanking patrons for their support. I will surely miss the bolognese.”
The money and goodwill extended to restaurants early in the pandemic are drying up.
Independent restaurant owners say that lifelines extended by landlords, banks and vendors when the pandemic first hit the U.S. are ending, while federal loans made as part of pandemic-related stimulus programs are long gone.
The bleak financial picture means that many more restaurants could close in the coming months, adding to the tens of thousands of restaurants that have already shut during the pandemic.
The timing couldn’t be worse. More states and localities have ordered restaurants to close their dining rooms again to curb the virus’s spread, with New York City among the latest to suspend indoor service earlier this month. Outdoor patios that helped carry restaurants through warmer months aren’t popular in much of the U.S. now, and landlords and suppliers who extended help earlier in the pandemic face challenges of their own after months of customers falling behind.
