The Government is contributing $600,000 to help residents affected by this weekend s floods in the South Island with their recovery efforts. While weather conditions are beginning to clear, heavy rainfall caused significant flooding in Marlborough, Tasman, and Buller on Saturday, and around 900 people were evacuated from their homes as a result. A State of Emergency was also declared in Marlborough. While in the Buller district on Sunday afternoon assessing flood damage, acting Minister for Emergency Management Kris Faafoi and Agriculture Minister Damien O Connor announced several funding contributions for affected communities. Acting Minister for Emergency Management Kris Faafoi held a press conference after parts of the South Island were flooded and areas were evacuated. A State of Emergency was declared in the Marlborough District on Saturday, with around 900 people evacuated from their homes as heavy rainfall caused significant flooding.  Residents in Renwick, Spring Creek, Tuamarina, and the Lower Wairau were given evacuation orders on Saturday. Initially, Renwick residents were the lucky ones able to return to their homes on Sunday, but the Marlborough District Council has now given everyone the all-clear.

The Government is proposing to establish four publicly-owned entities to take responsibility for drinking water, wastewater and stormwater infrastructure to stop average household bills reaching $9000 by 2051. A report by the Water Industry Commission for Scotland estimates that New Zealand will need to invest between $120 billion to $185 billion on water infrastructure over the next 30 years to meet standards and provide for future population growth.
