The Newton Rigg Campus in Penrith TWO former Workington MPs described the decision to close Cumbria s 125-year-old agricultural college with more than 100 jobs losses as shameful and very distressing . Dale Campbell-Savours and Baroness Sue Hayworth have joined forces with former cabinet minister, Lord David Clark of Windermere, in condemning the announcement this week by the Further Education Commissioner that Newton Rigg College at Penrith was financially unviable , and declared no suitable bids had been received to take it over. Former Shadow Cabinet member, Sue Haworth, said she had contacted every member of the House of Commons Defra Select Committee to carry out an urgent inquiry into the whole Newton Rigg College affair. The whole business is very distressing, she said.
College 620x284 A PLEDGE of support has been given for a £30m healthcare college in the grounds of Royal Bolton Hospital after its development was ‘paused’ due to the coronavirus pandemic. The Bolton College of Medical Sciences (BCMS), which was granted planning permission at the Barnes Drive site in 2019, was planning to begin welcoming students in 2022. It was set to be the first such education centre in the UK and had aspirations to provide training across many disciplines, professions and agencies related to healthcare. But last month a joint statement from The University of Bolton and Bolton NHS Foundation Trust, said the development ‘has been paused due to the unprecedented challenges of Covid-19’.
Harvey A CAMPAIGN to to stop the last local authority run nursery from being closed in Bolton was given a massive boost as councillors backed moves to explore ways of keeping it open. Town hall chiefs had put forward proposals to shut Harvey Nursery in Great Lever, three years after it was saved following a public outcry. The closure of the nursery will result in around 50 children having to be found alternative provision and the loss of jobs. Martin Donaghy, the Labour group’s children’s services spokesman, gained support from a sizeable majority of Bolton Council after the matter had been called in by Labour members to be scrutinised further.
