Victoria’s lockdown will be extended past Wednesday as the state continues to try to get ahead of its COVID-19 outbreak.
As the state recorded 16 new local cases on Monday, Premier Daniel Andrews said a decision on the length of the lockdown would be announced on Tuesday. “I know this is not the news people want to hear,” he said.
“We will not be ready.”
During a COVID-19 update on Monday, Mr Andrews said the state had dodged “weeks and weeks” of lockdown by moving swiftly with restrictions, as Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton urged some patrons at the recent MCG Carlton versus Geelong match to get retested.

Freshly crowned as A-League premiers, Melbourne City FC will start embedding itself at its new home in coming months.
Admin staff for the champion club will start moving into the precinct in August.
Meanwhile, the club’s A-League and four-time W-League premiership teams start pre-season training in August and September respectively.
The academy teams started playing and training at Casey Fields in February.

Ben Brown has put his hand up for a senior recall with a bag of five goals in the VFL for Casey on Sunday.
The key forward’s big day helped the Demons to a 48-point win over Essendon at Casey Fields, extending the club’s unbeaten record to 6-0 in the state league this season.
Brown has played just three games since crossing over from North Melbourne in the off-season, with injury and poor form seeing Tom McDonald, Luke Jackson and Sam Weideman preferred ahead of him at times this year.
With the VFL postponed due to Victoria’s COVID lockdown last month, the game marked Brown’s first competitive outing in five weeks, his first chance to impress coach Simon Goodwin since May 23.
