Kandiyohi County Sheriff Eric Holien and Willmar Police Chief Jim Felt review turbulent year of 2020

The pandemic also saw an increase in domestic calls for law enforcement and a decrease in assaults. The Sheriff s Office saw an 18% decrease in assault calls and a 14% increase in domestic calls and the Willmar Police Department saw a 7% decrease in assault calls and a 20% increase in domestic calls from 2019. Both entities also saw a large increase in disorderly conduct calls, with the Police Department seeing a 28% increase and Sheriff s Office a 14% increase from 2019. The year also saw a rise in mental health calls, with the county reporting a 363% increase and the police reporting a 125% increase over 2019. Willmar Police Chief Jim Felt said that part of the reason law enforcement saw these increases and decreases is because the routines of people were upended and that caused a lot of stress.
