Iowa could collect $170 million from distributors of addictive opioids

View Comments Iowa stands to gain $170 million from a legal settlement with opioid painkiller companies, with much of the money going to support drug addiction treatment programs, Attorney General Tom Miller announced Wednesday. The money is to be collected over 18 years as part of a proposed $26 billion national settlement of legal claims against pharmaceutical distributors Cardinal, McKesson, and AmerisourceBergen, plus drugmaker Johnson & Johnson. The four giant companies were accused of helping spark the nation s deadly opioid epidemic by recklessly distributing highly addictive painkilling pills and patches. The money would go to states and local governments to help pay for treatment of the ensuing addictions.
