New Jersey Tests Battery-Operated Trains for Potential Savings
Electrifying rail lines in New Jersey would cost billions, so NJ Transit hopes to find a cost-saver in battery-operated trains. If successful, these trains would not only save money but also address environmental concerns.

An NJ Transit dual mode locomotive leaves Newark Penn Station running on electric power last month. A pilot program to study battery powered trains that could deliver the benefits of electrification without the high cost could happen if funding is found.
NJ Advance/Aristide Economopoulos (TNS) Battery-operated trains are being tested by the Long Island Rail Road as an alternative to the high cost of electrifying rail lines and NJ Transit has a plan to study the same type of project if it can find the money to do it.
A day of fun
Spend your day on the beach at Jenkinson s (300 Ocean Ave.), if you or your family want to break up the day with boardwalk activities like arcade games, rides and batting cages. Daily badges cost $3 for children and $11 for adults. But if you just want somewhere to relax, head to Bradshaw s Beach (1 Washington Ave.) to get away from the crowds. Daily badges cost $11.
After you re tanned to your heart s content, there s plenty to do along the boardwalk. Play a round of mini golf, enjoy happy hour at Martell s Tiki Bar (308-312 Boardwalk), or head to downtown Point Pleasant Beach and support some of the many locally owned businesses on Arnold Avenue.

A new tool shows how many vaccinations each New Jersey town has, by percentage, and age group. (Shutterstock)
NEW JERSEY New Jersey has launched a new online dashboard that tracks coronavirus vaccinations town-by-town, officials announced on Monday
(see which South Jersey towns have the highest vaccine rates below).
The charts posted on the state s website track how many adults have received one dose of a vaccine, and how many have been fully vaccinated in each town across the state, by percentage, Gov. Phil Murphy said during a news conference.
It can also be broken down by age group, including 18-and-older and 65-and-older, Health Commissioner Judith Persichilli said. Each town is shaded, with towns that have higher vaccination percentages being shaded the darkest.
