Pedestrian dies at local hospital after crash on Gulf-to-Bay Boulevard

CLEARWATER — A 46-year-old homeless man died at a local hospital after he was struck by a vehicle about 8:45 p.m. April 5 on Gulf-to-Bay Boulevard just west of Belcher Road. The driver of the vehicle was charged with misdemeanor DUI. According to Clearwater police, the unidentified man was crossing the roadway outside a crosswalk when he was struck by a 2004 Jeep Patriot traveling westbound. He was taken to Morton Plant Hospital where he died. The driver of the Jeep, Carson David Powell, 18, of Clearwater was booked into the Pinellas County Jail and charged with misdemeanor DUI. Bail was set at $500. He was released on cash bond at 10:07 a.m. April 6.

Life-threatening injuries reported in crash on Gulf-to-Bay in Clearwater

CLEARWATER — Clearwater police and fire and rescue personnel responded to a crash with serious injuries about 10:16 p.m. April 2 at the intersection of Keene Road and Gulf-to-Bay Boulevard. Police say a 2011 Ford F-350 truck traveling north on Keene Road was attempting a left turn onto Gulf-to-Bay Boulevard when it collided with a 2004 Acura. The driver of the Acura was flown to Tampa General Hospital with life-threatening injuries. A passenger in the Acura also suffered life-threatening injuries and was transported to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg. The driver of the truck was transported to Bayfront Health as a trauma alert. All lanes at the intersection were closed several hours during the investigation. No information about the identities of those injured has been released.

No one was injured in the series of incidents that started after midnight Friday, according to Clearwater police. The wrong-way driving incident took place days after Tampa police said an officer died trying to stop an impaired, speeding driver going the wrong way on Interstate 275.
