County officials said they have an initial goal on how much they hope to decrease the tipping fees. We’re hoping to reach around $40 per ton or less, said Don Murray, Bay County s General Services director. However, that final rate will be dictated by an ongoing rate study.
The shutdown of the incinerator was met with mixed emotions from people in the community and especially haulers, who will have to haul waste to the landfill in West Bay, a far travel for some.
The tipping fees being rescinded and eventually lowered is one of the byproducts of the shutdown. Bay County Commissioner Tommy Hamm said in September that mom-and-pop businesses would save $700,000 a year.
