Citing Safety Concerns The City of Rochester Closes City Pools
Silver Lake s Pool was scheduled to open for the summer this week, but the city s other pool located at Soldier s Field has been open and has seen a huge spike in attendance this year because of the combination of free admission and record heat.
Yesterday, the Soldier s Field Pool announced a capacity limit of 300 in an effort to control unruly guests but that policy quickly changed. Citing safety concerns, the City of Rochester Parks & Recreation Department just announced the two city pools will be temporarily closed, effective immediately.
A press release sent from the city says the pools will remain closed while city teammates work with community partners to address safety concerns that have arisen over the past few days.

A final report on Rochester’s goose management efforts doesn’t necessarily reflect how many goslings actually hatched in the city’s parks this spring, due to unexpected tampering with nests.
The city was required to file a report with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources in connection to the permit that allowed volunteers and a consultant to treat goose eggs in an effort to reduce hatching in four city parks.

The search for nests was the second outing for a group of volunteers seeking to help manage the goose population by limiting the number of eggs that hatch.
The Zumbro Valley Audubon Society’s annual Christmas Bird Count conducted by the Zumbro Valley Audubon Society found 5,405 geese in Rochester last year, up from 4,244 the year before, but down from an eight-year high of 9,884 in 2017.
Egg addling involves any process that prevents the eggs from developing, and volunteers are using an oiling process.
After using a float test to ensure eggs haven’t reached the 14th day of incubation, volunteers dip them into corn oil and return them to their nests. They will return in three weeks to remove the eggs after the nesting season passes.
