For the Battlefords a case could be made that it was our worst year ever worse than even the cryptosporidium and oil spill years and not just because of the COVID-19 pandemic that prompted shutdowns, economic devastation, and no shortage of loss of life in the province and world. It was a year in which one event after another ended up postponed or called off. It was also a year of devastating tragedy: the loss of a beloved Battleford NHL player, a tragic local murder-suicide, and ongoing and notorious criminal cases in the local courts. But look on the bright side: at least North Battleford isn’t the “Crime Capital of Canada” anymore, ending a long streak at the top of the Crime Severity Index this year.
Here is a look at the long, but by no means exhaustive, list of scheduled activities and major events that were postponed or cancelled, and in some cases we have listed when you might be able to see them happen again.
Battlefords North Stars Playoffs suspended March 12. 2019-20 season was officially cancelled March 13. New season began Nov. 6; season suspended on order of public health Nov. 27 with order in effect until no earlier than Jan. 15, 2020.
SPHL Finals Game 3 of Meota-Battleford SPHL final scheduled for March 13 was cancelled season ends without a champion declared.
Dekker Centre Christine Tassan et les Imposteures scheduled for March 31, 2020 has been cancelled.
It began Dec. 1 and will carry on to Jan. 9, 2021, with the gates open to the general public for driving tours from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. each night, except statutory holidays. Admission is $10 per car (maximum of five guests from the same household or your “bubble”). New this year is a season pass for $30 allowing families to come and tour as many times as they like. The WDM can also accept debit or credit card at the admission gate this year. “We’re extremely happy with the turn out this year, from sponsors as well as visitors,” says Shirley Maze, Light Up the Village co-ordinator. “Plans are already underway for next year.”
