The Saskatchewan Government is calling the first year of their Accelerated Site Closure Program a success, after strong uptakes in areas like Lloydminster.
The province rolled out the project last year. It was put in place so that Saskatchewan-based oil and gas service companies to clean up and reclaim areas with inactive oil and gas well sites across the province.
The initiative has $400 million to be dispersed under the Federal Government’s COVID-19 Economic Response Plan. Of that, $184 Million in work contracts have sent out, with a total of $61 million being paid for already complete work.
Vowing things were about to get “very public,” during Tuesday’s city council meeting, Dionne announced plans for a campaign to pressure the provincial government to grant that plant and others the access to timber they need to operate.
Meanwhile the provincial government says at the moment “virtually all the timber in the Prince Albert area is contractually allocated to existing companies, including Paper Excellence for the potential re-opening of the pulp mill.”
“I did serve our MLA notice this morning that I will be starting a heavy public campaign,” Dionne told council, explaining he’ll be encouraging people to call their MLAs and the premier to ask, “where’s our wood supply.”
Launched in May 2020, the ASCP will provide up to $400 million in federal government funding over two years through the COVID-19 Economic Response Plan. This program has helped to create and maintain oil and gas service sector jobs and sustain the overall health of Saskatchewan s energy sector during a very challenging time, Energy and Resources Minister Bronwyn Eyre said. The ASCP, which builds on the work that Saskatchewan was already doing in this area, is a major economic stimulus program that is also good for the environment. Working with Minister Eyre and the Government of Saskatchewan, this program kept workers on the job this past year during the pandemic, Canada s Minister of Natural Resources Seamus O Regan Jr. said. We re cleaning up our environment, and supporting the hardworking men and women in our oil and gas sector - including in First Nations and Métis communities.
