WAILEA Demonstrators gathered peacefully on Wailea Beach on Saturday to send a message to government and tourism officials that tourism management is sorely needed.
“Hotels and activity companies have been profiting from selling space on our beaches with no compensation to the county and state, no limits to the amount of equipment used and are taking over our beaches,” community activist Kai Nishiki said leading up to the “Take Back the Beach” event.
The rally drew scores of residents, along with Maui Police Department and state Department of Land and Natural Resources personnel, from 7 a.m. until sundown Saturday.

DLNR crews clean out more than 30 homeless camps at Diamond Head DLNR continues coordinated efforts to address homelessness at Diamond Head. By HNN Staff | April 6, 2021 at 7:27 PM HST - Updated April 6 at 7:27 PM
HONOLULU, Hawaii (HawaiiNewsNow) - More than 30 homeless camps on both sides of Diamond Head are being cleaned up this week by state Department of Land and Natural Resources crews.
Officials said the clean-up at Diamond Head is part of a larger statewide effort to manage threats to natural and cultural resources in areas under DLNR jurisdiction.
DLNR said that cleaning up the area and enforcing âno campingâ rules are not the only goals of this effort, but so is finding a solution to house the homeless.
This week over 30 homeless camps on both sides of Diamond Head are being cleaned-up as part of a larger statewide coordinated effort to manage threats to natural and cultural resources on State lands and parks under DLNR jurisdiction.
The statewide efforts by DLNR are not focused only on cleanup and enforcement of “no camping” rules, explained Pua Aiu, who serves as homeless coordinator for DLNR. “Housing is a piece, outreach is a piece, and enforcement is a piece of the plan and if you don’t have all three, it’s not going to work,” said Aiu in a press release.
