The way forward? Transitional housing, Cassels said. People in emergency housing were signed on to short-term contracts by the Ministry of Social Development, known as Emergency Housing Special Needs Grants, one week at a time. Transitional housing, however, was contracted for an average of around 12 weeks, and typically included some wraparound supports, depending on the provider. “I don’t think the emergency housing system was ever contemplated, or designed, to deal with such a dramatic increase in the number of people who needed to use it. “I believe that inevitably there’ll be a series of imperfect steps before we find a solution. That solution is obviously, slowly but surely, moving from emergency housing to transitional housing.”
Gaston County Star Students, Teachers announced
Sponsored by
The Gaston Gazette each year, the school district selects an exceptional student from each high school as the school’s Star Student.
Each student then named their respective Star Teacher, who had the greatest influence on the student during their Gaston County Schools education, and wrote an essay about how the teacher motivated and inspired them.
Each student honoree will receive a framed Star Student certificate and a Star Student lapel pin, and each teacher honoree receives an engraved Star Teacher trophy from
The Gazette.
The students and teachers are recognized during a ceremony and reception at The Schiele Museum in Gastonia, but the pandemic forced the cancellation of the in-person event in 2020 and 2021.

They have also said they “aren’t seeing a major impact” on the county’s coronavirus levels since the next set of restrictions eased on April 12.
The government’s roadmap out of lockdown allowed pubs and restaurants to operate outside, non-essential retail, hairdressers, salons, gyms, zoos and theme parks to open as well as enabling people to meet outside in groups of six.
