Early Planning Needed for 2022 Awcon - Zimbabwe Today

Early Planning Needed for 2022 Awcon January 18, 2021 Following the announcement of Morocco as hosts for the 2022 Africa Women’s Cup of Nations, ZIFA technical director Wilson Mutekede says planning has to start now to ensure they have a competitive side. The announcement by the Confederation of African Football last Friday is good news for women’s football after the 2020 tournament was cancelled and it is probably a boost to the North African country’s efforts to promote women’s football. Morocco have been making strides in developing the women’s game and last year the Royal Moroccan Football Federation unveiled a four-year development plan built on sporting development, financial investment and technical growth.

Mighty Warriors Still Hold Olympics Distinction

Mighty Warriors Still Hold Olympics Distinction January 12, 2021 THEY wrote their own piece of history just over four years ago when they made their maiden appearance at the Olympic Games in Brazil. The Mighty Warriors still hold the distinction of being the first team from Zimbabwe to qualify for a global football showcase. They fought against all odds to find themselves at the final tournament at the 2016 Games and they were one of the major highlights for Olympics during those Games considering the road they walked to achieve the ultimate goal. Sadly, it was a different and disappointing story altogether for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics qualifiers when the problems that have over the years haunted women’s football in this country manifested in an unexpected way.

Zifa must take Warriors preps seriously

Zifa must take Warriors preps seriously - December 24, 2020 THE Zimbabwe senior soccer team is scheduled to take part in the sixth edition of the African Nations Championships (Chan) a tournament designed exclusively for home-based players. They go into this tournament against the background of calamitous performances by both the Young Warriors and Mighty Warriors who took part in the regional Cosafa tournament recently. While the dismal performances by these teams can be attributed to inactivity caused by the COVID-19 restrictions, Zifa is largely to blame on account of failure to prepare the teams ahead of the tournaments. This has been a perennial problem for our national soccer teams. In most cases, they don’t fail, but are failed by those at the helm of the beautiful game.
