Oct. 31: 260 cases; 6 deaths
It is âclosing dayâ for PortSmittâs Lakeway Restaurant, the family-run eatery that has fallen victim to the economic pressures of the coronavirus pandemic. Transmission occurs at PortSmittâs on this day, as well as during the preceding few days.
Meanwhile, approximately 20 people arrive at a Pittsfield residence where, health leaders say, there was a Halloween party and masks were not worn consistently indoors. Transmission occurs.
Nov. 3: 269 cases; 6 deaths
The Brick House Pub in Housatonic elects to shut temporarily, after one of its servers learned that others who had attended the same Halloween party had tested positive. The server would go on to test positive, too.

Trader Joe s is adding quite the aromatic option to its freezer aisles. The affordable grocery chain released a new Roasted Garlic and Pesto Pizza consisting of four cheeses and a deep-fried, Naples style crust. Trader Joe s bloggers have been praising the pizza which, by the way, takes just 15 minutes to make since it hit stores in mid-December, with @traderjoesobsessed writing, You can really taste the roasted garlic and If you love doughy and crispy thick crust this is for you. So we all know that this was the worst year for Pittsburgh dining ever. Nobody had plans for a worldwide pandemic, and the restaurant industry was hit especially hard. Right now, indoor dining is closed through Jan. 4 by state order to reduce the transmission of Covid.
I’ve been writing this roundup of every year’s best new restaurants to open in Pittsburgh since 2016. There were great years, many of them. Every time, I always did my absolute best to check out as many new restaurants as I could, then make my choices.
That wasn’t really possible this year. I did a fair amount of takeout, though. I also relied on the recommendations of the NEXTPittsburgh team, especially Eat/Drink Editor Kristy Locklin.
