Vern Miller, Kansas’ legendary former Attorney General marked his 92nd birthday this week at his home in Arizona.
Fifty years ago, on Nov. 4, 1970, Miller, then the Sedgwick County Sheriff, defeated a Harvard educated Assistant Attorney General who could lay claim to having won nearly two dozen cases before the Kansas Supreme Court. Miller had never tried a case in court after obtaining a law degree attending night school at Oklahoma City University.
Prior to Miller taking office in 1971, the Attorney General’s office seemed a bit low key doing the day-to-day work as the state’s chief attorney and law enforcement officer. That was all about to change.
