Moral obligation : John Howard intervenes to prick Payne and ScoMo s conscience on Afghans who risked everything for us

‘Moral obligation’: John Howard intervenes to prick Payne and ScoMo’s conscience on Afghans who risked everything for us Crikey 35 mins ago © Provided by Crikey Days after the final Australian troops left Afghanistan, the man who first sent them there 20 years ago says the government must grant visas to Afghans who helped the defence force (ADF) during our longest conflict. Former prime minister John Howard told SBS Australia has a “moral obligation” to provide asylum to the thousands of people who were critical to Australia’s war effort. It’s a major intervention from a Liberal elder statesman, and one which will put further pressure on the Morrison government to fast-track the evacuation of Afghan translators, local staff and their families as the Taliban advances through the country. And it highlights growing concern, including from within government ranks, that a situation everyone agrees is a humanitarian crisis is getting out of Australia’s control.

36,000 Strong Modern Slavery Act Petition Goes To Parliament

Monday, 28 June 2021, 1:54 pm Trade Aid and World Vision and many other supporters head to Parliament tomorrow (29 June) at 12.30pm to present a collective petition calling for a Modern Slavery Act. More than 36,000 New Zealanders have signed, asking the Government to act now. Modern Slavery goes against our Kiwi values. New Zealanders have united with a strong message that they do not want slavery in our goods. Modern slavery legislation will make it easier for Kiwis to expect slavery-free products and services from companies. The Modern Slavery Act would require New Zealand businesses to understand the risks in their purchasing, report on those risks, and take action to address them.
