Organisers of Victoriaâs long-running Rip Curl Pro surfing event say they tried everything to ensure the local leg of the international competition could go ahead at Bells Beach and were prepared to pay all quarantine costs before the state government refused its request to land a charter flight.
World Surf Leagueâs Australian general manager Andrew Stark, said his organisation tried to negotiate with the Victorian government until late January, but its requests to land a private charter plane in Melbourne â with 125 staff and surfers on board â were denied.

Live music is back and Nine will screen 2021 Sounds Better Together a concert staged by the Mushroom Group in Mallacoota this Saturday.
This features performances by James Reyne, Daryl Braithwaite + Vika & Linda + Mia Wray, but the special, hosted by David Campbell, will also draw upon performances from other events which have been staged across Victoria: Jimmy Barnes, Tones And I, Missy Higgins, The Teskey Brothers, Archie Roach, Ross Wilson, Birds Of Tokyo (with the MSO), The Living End, Something For Kate, Linda, Gordi.
Jane Gazzo, Kate Gudinski and Madeline Slattery will co-host.
