American Airlines is bringing back its daily flights between the Chicago area and Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport, the fourth airline at SRQ scheduled to fly between Chicago and the Sarasota area.
The local airport said in a Tuesday press release that American has boosted its seasonal service to Chicago O Hare International Airport to fly over the summer because of increased demand.
The service was suspended last year because of low interest from passengers resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic, Nichelle Barrett, a spokesperson for American Airlines, said in an email. Flights are currently scheduled to run through Nov. 6, Barrett said, and on Saturdays from June 3 to Sept. 7, the flights will operate twice per day.

Glenda and Joe Padgett stood at gate B10 at Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport on Sunday morning, wearing face masks and holding up “welcome” signs for Southwest Airlines made for them by a friend’s daughter.
There were a lot of people excitedly waiting for Southwest’s first-ever plane at Sarasota-Bradenton to land, which it did at 11:34 a.m. Sunday, but the Padgett family’s connection to the first-ever voyage was a little more personal.
Their son, Jared, is a Southwest employee who has worked as an in-flight scheduler for the airline for about five years. The Padgetts are now a “Southwest family,” Glenda said, and they have taken their fair share of maiden Southwest voyages.
