Pre-Gamin : Braves at Cubs (1:20 CT) - Lineups, Broadcast Info, Game Thread

Friday. Afternoon. Baseball. I love it. In fact, I love it so much I convinced Joe (the Obvious Shirts guy) to give me a special power to make any shirt I want $5 off using the code CeramiShop. That code applies to any shirt in the Bleacher Nation section of the Obvious Shirts store, but I’m going to add/remove 1-2 shirts all the time. For example, today, from now until the end of the game, you can get $5 off the the FRIDAY 1:20 shirt and only that shirt. It’s going away as soon as the game ends, so you know what to do.

UPDATE: Pitching change. Kyle Hendricks was scratched tonight after reportedly not feeling well. The hope is its nothing more than an abundance of caution, given the two coaches with positive tests and four other players on the COVID IL. Alec Mills will start in his place and the Cubs chances of winning this game just dropped significantly … which probably means they’ll win in a blowout, because nothing about this season has made all that much sense so far. If you thought yesterday was rough, I’m sorry to tell you it’s not likely getting any easier tonight. The Brewers top starter, Brandon Woodruff, is taking the mound against the Cubs (with his 97 MPH fastball, 31.0% strikeout rate, and 4.8% walk rate). He also just manhandled the Cubs his last time out, to the tune of 7.0 scoreless, one-hit innings with no walks and 8 Ks. So, yeah. Usually, when a team sees the same pitcher in short order you give the benefit to the batters, but I just don’t know if I can necessarily go

Happy Jake Day! Even if today’s Brewers starter, Corbin Burnes, is “one of only three pitchers in history to have consecutive games with six-plus innings with no walks and no more than one hit allowed,” he’s not Jake Arrieta. And I love me some Jake Arrieta. Like most of the Cubs starters this season, Arrieta has had one good start, his first against the Pirates (6.0 IP, 6H, 1ER, 1BB, 5Ks) and one bad one (6.0 IP, 7H, 2ER, 3BB, 4Ks). Of course, that’s all relative, because he was lucky enough to get good results in each of them. It’s not easy facing the same team twice in short order (even if it was the Pirates), so despite all those hits and walks in his second start of the year, Arrieta does deserve credit for getting the job done. That’s very Jon Lester of him.

Pre-Gamin : Cubs at Pirates (5:35 CT) - Lineups, Broadcast Info, Game Thread

The Pirates last (and only) win of the season came on Opening Day against the Chicago Cubs. After that, they dropped two in a row to Chicago Arrieta v. Anderson (just like their follow-up loss on Thursday) and Keller v. Davies (just like their other rematch today) and were obliterated by the Reds in three straight. But now’s not the time to worry about the quality of that franchise. The Cubs need to win every single winnable game early in the season, because if they’re not clear playoff contenders come the middle of June, the daily #hugwatch will be in full effect.
