Savannah Historic District s Davenport Museum will see upgrades next year

By early next year, Savannahians and tourists alike will be able to enjoy an upgrade and expansion to the Davenport House Museum, one of the Historic District’s most popular landmarks. The Kennedy Pharmacy, one of the few remaining wooden storefronts on East Broughton located behind the Davenport House, is currently undergoing restoration, and a new exhibit is underway as well. Once complete, the Kennedy Pharmacy, a once-shuttered building, will turn into a gift shop for the Davenport Museum showcasing a “blend of historical details with modern amenities” said a Historic Savannah Foundation press release.  The building will also house the tour ticketing area, restrooms, and upstairs offices for Davenport House Museum staff, which will free up space on the first floor of the Davenport building for the new Urban Enslaved exhibit.

Savannah looks to its past for National Historic Preservation Month Savannah looks to its past for National Historic Preservation Month By Blair Caldwell | May 4, 2021 at 6:07 PM EDT - Updated May 4 at 7:03 PM SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - May is National Historic Preservation Month and it’s no secret the past is very present in Savannah. This month is all about celebrating what makes the Hostess City unique. “It’s extraordinary that in Savannah the way we build is by preserving our past and I don’t think there’s any other community that has more dedicated individuals and organizations to preserve not just the aesthetics, and not just the history, but our culture through our storytelling and our placemaking,” said Michael Owens, President and CEO of Tourism Leadership Council.

Savannah Powder Magazine: historic building housed gunpowder, dynamite

Of all of Savannah’s historical buildings, the Savannah Powder Magazine remains its most secret and remote and for good reason. The Powder Magazine was built in 1898 to house the city’s supply of gunpowder and dynamite well away from populated areas so that if it accidentally blew up, it wouldn’t take the half the city with it. Mayor Peter Meldrim went all out and hired famous architects Alfred S. Eichberg and Hyman Witcover to design the magazine. Having designed the City Hall and Telfair Hospital, Eichberg and Witcover were probably a little over qualified to build what basically amounted to a storage shed that no one was meant to see.
