McElwain CHANGES IN STORE — Steubenville’s Historic Landmarks Commission approved a Certificate of Appropriateness for Zito Parakaleo LLC, new owners of the Huntington Bank Building on North Fourth Street, to remove an unsightly metal awning from the terra cotta structure. STEUBENVILLE The city’s Historic Landmarks Commission signed off on a Certificate of Appropriateness for a downtown developer to remove a metal awning from the front of one of their buildings. The awning is an add-on to the Huntington Bank Building at 100 N. Fourth St. “It’s not original to the building,” said Zeph Swope of Zito Parakaleo LLC. “I’m not sure the exact year it was installed.”

City To Reconsider Fairfield Inn Extension Details   The Astoria city council holds a public hearing Monday, April 19th to reconsider a permit extension to build a Fairfield Inn hotel on the city waterfront. The city has a lengthy history with this Hollander Hospitality property and Mark Hollander s proposal to build the hotel on the site where The Ship Inn Restuarant once operated on 2nd street fronting the city riverwalk. The city Historic Landmarks Commission and the Design Review Commission both denied the permit for the hotel construction in July 2018 and Hollander appealed to the city council which reversed the denial

eayres@theintelligencer.net WHEELING Wheeling city officials are moving forward with a measure that will make sure a proper review is done before any of the city’s historic structures meet the wrecking ball. Members of the Development Committee of Wheeling City Council recently recommended a proposed ordinance establishing a demolition review process be forwarded to city council for consideration. “This is something that’s probably three or four years in the works now,” Mayor Glenn Elliott said. Councilman Ty Thorngate is the representative of Wheeling City Council who serves on the Historic Landmarks Commission. He, commission Chairman C.J. Kaiser and the other commission members were applauded for their continued work to move this legislation forward, along with former Councilman Brian Wilson, who the mayor said helped initiate the conversation.
