Johnson looks ahead to Accrington

The Head Coach firstly touched on Tuesday night’s draw at Hull, having watched the contest back. “After looking back at the video and assessing it objectively, there were a couple of areas we fell short but there were some very good elements to our performance,” Johnson explained. “You have to give consideration to Hull’s physicality and quality on the day, and I thought it was a good game – a rare game where both teams are fully going for three points right until the end. “Then in the last seconds, the goalkeeper makes a brilliant save and Aiden O’Brien hits the crossbar – we were pushing for the win.”

Accrington Stanley 0-2 Sunderland AFC

Accrington Stanley 0-2 Sunderland AFC   Ross Stewart’s debut goal helped dispatch Accrington Stanley on Wednesday evening, as Sunderland clinched their ninth win in 10 games.   The January signing was introduced ahead of the second period and he made an instant impact, sending a looping header over Toby Savin and into the corner.   Lee Johnson’s side controlled the opening period at the Wham Stadium, but Accrington also spurned inviting chances during the opening 45 minutes.    Jack Diamond and Luke O’Nien went closest for the Lads, who remained patient and reaped the rewards when Stewart’s magic moment arrived right on queue.

Back to league action at Accrington

Sunderland’s memorable weekend of Wembley triumph has brought an early sense of success to everyone on Wearside, but the excitement must be put to one side this Wednesday as we turn our attention straight back to Sky Bet League One action and our visit to Accrington Stanley (7pm). A huge 13 games remain as the league run-in edges closer, with a wide-open race taking place and the Lads looking to continue an inspired run of form. With the original fixture postponed from earlier in the season, this will be 2020-21’s first meeting between the two sides – and only the fifth complete match in history.
