The State of Illinois has announced twenty-two winners from across the state for Friday's COVID Vaccine Lottery. Each winner will get $100K for getting life-saving protection by receiving the COVID-19 Vaccine. One resident was chosen locally from the Wayne Co area. All Illinois residents who receive the vaccine will be entered for a chance to win $1 million grand prizes. Residents must receive their shots by August 18th to be eligible to win. The Illinois Department of Public Health reported 3,114 new confirmed and probable cases of COVID-19 in Illinois, including 24 additional deaths. Currently, IDPH is reporting a total of 1, 454, 208 cases, including 23, 575 deaths. As of mid-last week 1,608, individuals in Illinois were reported to be in the hospital. Of those, 324 were in the ICU and 152 patients were on ventilators. The preliminary seven-day statewide positivity for cases as a percent of total test from Aug 5th – 11th is 5%. Wayne County EMS and Fairfield rural firemen responded to a two-vehicle accident near Barnhill yesterday morning. According to county deputies, 55-year-old Normal resident William J. Caldwell was struck by 44-year-old Springerton resident Kriste R. Ingram after she drifted into his lane. Both parties refused transport to a hospital, and a tow truck was called to the scene. Wayne County Board Chairman Bruce Reeves says the board will not vote on naming an Interim Sheriff at its meeting tonight. He says the board must first formally declare a vacancy for the position, and letters will then be sent to the Republican and Democratic Party Chairs. The board is expected to hold a special session in the coming days to bring the matter to a vote. The North Wayne School Board held a special session last night to vote on following the state mask mandate for schools. The board voted 7-0 in favor of keeping masking optional for the year, both indoors and on buses.
