Image courtesy of Louis Quijas   Update your browser or Flash plugin Long before the national calls to “defund the police” and shift some of their responsibilities to other care professionals, the city of High Point started a program that earned national recognition for doing just that. The Violent Crimes Task Force emphasized cooperation between the police and the social organizations that served the community.  Starting in 1997, Louis Quijas spent five years as police chief in High Point, refining the program before leaving for posts in the FBI and federal Department of Homeland Security. He’s now a consultant in Nashville. Quijas spoke with WFDD’s Paul Garber about the program and what police departments today can learn from it. 

Jamaica Plain man kept it local when robbing a bank yesterday, police say

Tue, 02/23/2021 - 9:01pm Boston Police report arresting a Jamaica Plain man they say scoped out three banks along Centre Street yesterday before finally deciding to rob the Citizens Bank branch at 696 Centre St., next to the 7-Eleven. Police say officers from the Violent Crimes Task Force, on patrol as part of an investigation into recent bank robberies, actually watched Richard Pimental, 60, get out of a car at Harris Avenue and Centre Street, about a half block from the branch, and then shop for a bank to rob, around 12:45 p.m. He went into the Citizens Bank branch and then: [T]he officers observed him sprint away, looking back over his shoulder while removing a hat, mask and gloves. Pimental ran back towards Harris Avenue and was observed in the rear of the same black motor vehicle he was seen exiting earlier.

Duluth investigators injured in Superior pursuit incident

WDIO-TV Created: February 17, 2021 03:10 PM Officers were involved in two separate pursuits in Superior at midday Wednesday, including one in which two investigators from the Duluth Police Department were injured. The first incident began at about 11:30 a.m. when officers and investigators from the Superior and Duluth police departments and the Lake Superior Drug and Violent Crimes Task Force attempted to stop a person near the 2000 block of Hammond Avenue. Police say the 42-year-old man was wanted on warrants for second-degree assault and drug-related charges. Police say the man fled in a motor vehicle, causing significant property damage to a garage, two fences, private vehicles, and multiple police vehicles.
