Somerset Police make five arrests in week of action tackling knife crime
Police across Somerset have taken part in a national week of action tackling knife crime, with five arrests being made and 26 knives being taken off the streets.
The operation, called Operation Sceptre, was co-ordinated and led by the National Police Chief’s Council (NPCC), and brought police forces across the country together in a period of intensification to concentrate efforts on enforcement, education and engagement.
The week’s operation resulted in:
• 26 knives taken off the streets, 22 of which were surrendered to Police bins • 82 weapon sweeps being carried out
A TOTAL of 26 knives were taken off the streets of the Avon and Somerset Police area during a week-long clampdown. The force took part in the nationwide Operation Sceptre with the aim of reducing the number of people carrying knives. The initiative, co-ordinated and led by the National Police Chief’s Council brings police forces across the country together in a period of intensification to concentrate efforts on enforcement, education and engagement. From April 26 through to 2 May, officers across Avon and Somerset carried out a range of activities including:
Educational visits to schools and colleges to talk to young people about the dangers and consequences of carrying a knife;
