The votes were overwhelming as the Senate passed the bill with a 92-6 vote and the House of Representatives passed it by a vote of 359-53. President Trump was widely expected to sign the legislation, but he has now stated that he will veto it unless the $600 checks sent to individuals are increased to $2,000. Shipments of the newly approved novel coronavirus vaccine developed by Moderna arrived at Corridor hospitals on Tuesday.
Moderna’s vaccine, which received federal emergency use authorization late last week, arrives in Eastern Iowa just one week after the first doses of a COVID-19 vaccine were shipped nationwide.
The new batch is the first vaccine shipment for many hospitals statewide, including Mercy Hospital in Iowa City, making this week’s arrival a “monumental moment” in the pandemic for these facilities, said hospital spokesman Aaron Scheinblum. Two hundred doses arrived at Mercy Iowa City on Tuesday.
University of Iowa Health Care Chief Pharmacy Officer Mike Brownlee confirmed his campus received 1,500 doses of the Moderna vaccine and would finish using its current allotment of the version developed by Pfizer-BioNTech before tapping the new shipment.
The moment was not expected. But neither was it difficult to interpret.

The first shot in Iowa was documented by a few journalists, including Vanessa Miller and Andy Abeyta of The Gazette. At 9:39 a.m. Dec. 14, Miller tweeted a five-second video of David Conway, an emergency room nurse at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, receiving the historic shot.

IOWA CITY â Enrollment across Iowaâs public, private and community colleges this fall dropped 4.7% from a year ago â nearly double the 2.5% decline nationally in postsecondary enrollment.
Fall 2020 college and university enrollment in Iowa dropped across all sectors, with community colleges taking a 5.8% hit and nonprofit private campuses collectively losing 3% of their total enrollment, according to Iowa College Aid, a state agency charged with making college accessible for Iowans.
Iowaâs public universities â the University of Iowa, Iowa State University and the University of Northern Iowa â collectively reported enrollment losses of 4.4% from fall 2019 to fall 2020, including their graduate and undergraduate students. Their combined undergrad enrollment fell nearly 5.3%.
