Henley pays tribute to the Duke of Edinbugh );   ); PEOPLE from the Henley area have spoken fondly of meeting the Duke of Edinburgh and how he made them laugh. They joined the many tributes from statesmen and celebrities to ordinary people around the world for the Queen’s husband, who died at Windsor Castle on Friday, aged 99. Prince Philip, the longest-serving consort in British history, had spent nearly a month in hospital where he underwent a heart procedure before returning home 24 days before his death. His funeral will be held at St George’s Chapel in Windsor tomorrow (Saturday).

Tributes to Prince Philip from New Forest leaders

His death was announced last Friday. New Forest District Council chairman, Councillor Allan Glass gave a speech followed by a two minute silence in honour of The Duke of Edinburgh during a meeting of the council on Monday. He said: “Our district has great pride in its royal associations, with a strong history of connections to the monarchy. The district has had the privilege of welcoming His Royal Highness on many visits over the years, which we now remember with warmth and fondness.” Cllr Glass laid flowers alongside the Deputy Lieutenant for Hampshire, Hallam Mills during a private ceremony at Appletree Court.

Largest participation in bird count scheme

Participation in an annual nationwide survey of farmland birds has more than doubled. Britain’s farmers and gamekeepers have shown their long-term commitment to conservation alongside productive land-use by completing this year’s GWCT Big Farmland Bird Count in record numbers. The Game & Wildlife Conservation Trust’s Dr Roger Draycott, who organised the count, said: “We could not be more delighted with the response to this year’s GWCT Big Farmland Bird Count. Despite much of the country being blanketed in snow during the count (5-21 February) participation has shot up, with 2,500 counts returned, representing a 65% increase in the number of counts submitted compared to 2020, which was also a record year.
