Government Reportedly Indebted to Forest Affected Communities More than US$3M Land Rental Fees Government Reportedly Indebted to Forest Affected Communities More than US$3M Land Rental Fees Share MONROVIA The National Benefit Sharing Trust Board (NBSTB) said the Government of Liberia owes forest affected communities more than US$3 million in land rental fees accrued through commercial logging activities. The NBSTB is the body that is responsible to oversee the distribution and management of the community share of the land rental fee. Recently, in an exclusive interview with reporters, the chairperson of the National Benefit Sharing Trust Board (NBSTB), Nora Bowier said the amount in question, is money that the government has failed to remit to the NBSTB over the last four years to carry out major developmental projects in counties where concessions activities are being implemented.

Customarily, FDA collaborates  with the Wild Chimpanzee Foundation (WCF), Liberia Chimpanzee Rescue Protection (LCRP), Humane Society International (HSI), Fauna &Flora International (FFI), Libassa Wildlife Sanctuary, Conservation International (CI), Society for the Conservation of Nature in Liberia (SCNL), Elephant Research and Conservation (ELRECO), Species Working Group of Liberia (SWGL), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Ministry of Justice (MoJ), the Ministry of Agriculture (MoA)    amongst others in sustainably managing the Liberian forest.

With more than 1.3 million hectares of Customary Land now under formal community ownership and control, the future seems to be getting brighter for local communities across the country.  Information gathered at the just ended national learning and experience sharing conference on Customary Land formalization, indicates that more than 100 communities have made significant progress towards completing the process for securing deeds to their land.
