New Chair Appointed to Forestry Innovation Transition Trust
April 30, 2021 - 12:53 PM
Inclusive Economic Growth Minister Labi Kousoulis has appointed former deputy minister Rosalind Penfound as the new chair of the Forestry Innovation Transition Trust.
Ms. Penfound replaces Sandra McKenzie, who has resigned to focus on her business.
“I want to thank Ms. McKenzie for her work to help advance the transition and development of the forestry sector towards a sustainable future through innovation,” said Mr. Kousoulis. “We are fortunate to be able to tap into the experience and knowledge of Ms. Penfound to continue the work of providing new inclusive economic growth opportunities in forestry.”

Donald said Genome Atlantic is looking to select and replicate various ideal tree genes, but not tweak them to create something new, which would be genetic modification.
The process begins with measuring different trees and seeds in various locations, Donald said, and then looking at their genomes for favourable properties they want to select out for an improved next generation.
That way, models can be built to help predict how a new tree will perform, Donald said.
The group is looking for all sorts of target traits, such as faster growth, more resiliency to pests, or the temperature extremes that are expected in a changing climate.

Cape Breton University s Verschuren Centre is receiving $672,000 in provincial funding in support of its bio-technology acceleration centre.
The money is coming from the Forestry Innovation Transition Trust created after Northern Pulp closed.
Beth Mason, the centre s president, said the goal is to grow alongside manufacturers and that could create jobs in Cape Breton.
The accelerator can turn forestry biomass like wood chips into products that are currently being produced by petrochemical materials.

Nova Scotia s $50-million Forestry Innovation Transition Trust has started paying out money.
Announced a year ago, the fund is intended to help the sector move toward sustainability and diversification in the wake of the closure of the Northern Pulp mill.
The funding announced Monday includes up to $2 million for the Nova Scotia Community College s multi-year forestry innovation voucher program, which allows new and existing businesses to develop new products and technology with the help of the college and its resources.
