Bill Cook ESCANABA Forestowners have a ridiculously cool set of resources at their fingertips. They have good reasons for ownership. Yet, nearly always, there is so much more. You might have recently acquired forestland or, perhaps, have owned a parcel for quite a while. At some point, the question may pop-up about what potential the forest has to offer. People own forests, or woodlands, for a variety of reasons. Researchers have teased-out a number of outstanding reasons, and some reasons of lesser importance, but it all basically comes down to the idea that the owners simply like forests and have done financially well-enough to own a chunk.

SOM MDARD Celebrates Stewardship Week with Michigan Association of Conservation Districts (MACD) For immediate release: April 26, 2021 LANSING, MI - The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD), in partnership with the Michigan Association of Conservation Districts (MACD), is celebrating Stewardship Week, April 25 - May 2, a nationwide program led by the National Association of Conservation Districts (NACD) that recognizes the importance of natural resource conservation. This year s theme is Healthy Forests, Healthy Communities. Michigan s 20.3 million acres of forests contribute significantly toward the values and quality-of-life shared by its residents, said MDARD Director Gary McDowell. Roughly nine million acres are owned by individuals and families. MDARD works with these landowners to manage their land sustainably through the Forestry Assistance Program and Qualified Forest Program, which are carried out by the 75 Conservation Districts in Michi

From April 15 to July 15, oak trees are at high risk for oak wilt, a serious fungal disease that can weaken white oaks and kill red oak trees within weeks of infection. During this time of year, flying beetles can carry oak wilt fungus spores from tree to tree and the fungus can infect trees through wounds left by pruning or storm damage.
