Small Business Commissioner Judy O’Connell, who will announce her retirement on Tuesday after more than four years in the role, said her office received 276 inquires about commercial tenancy disputes in the first two weeks after the wage subsidy and tenancy protections ended on March 28.

Eligible Victorian businesses can now receive commercial tenancy relief until March 28, 2021, after the Victorian government extended its rent relief scheme. Small business tenants seeking rent relief from January 1 to March 28 can apply by contacting their landlords with a written request that outlines their eligibility. To be eligible, commercial tenants must be small to medium enterprises with an annual aggregated turnover under $50 million that take part in the federal government’s JobKeeper scheme. Tenants that have already received rent relief throughout 2020 are also required to write to their landlords with a fresh application that includes recent evidence of their eligibility.

A lawyer has weighed in on what the 2021 version of the scheme may look like. In a letter to members, the Real Estate Institute of Victoria (REIV) acknowledged state minister for small business Jaala Pulford’s announcement on the weekend of 12 and 13 December that the Commercial Tenancy Relief Scheme was being extended to 28 March 2021. REIV president Leah Calnan said “it was extremely disappointing to hear of an important change via social media”.
