DMARC begins fifth round of USDA food box distributions Thursday, February 4, 2021 11:13 AM The Des Moines Area Religious Council has begun distributing food boxes through the fifth round of the U.S. Department of Agriculture s Farmers to Families Food Box Program. The distribution began on Monday and will continue through at least the end of February. According to a news release, there is a possibility of the program being extended through April. DMARC participated in the first four rounds of the program from late May through December. Additional funding for the fifth round of the program was included in the latest federal COVID-19 relief package approved by Congress in December. The boxes contain 20 pounds of fresh produce, meat dairy products and a gallon of milk. They are distributed through DMARC’s network of 14 partner food pantries and more than 30 mobile food pantry locations. Nearly 2,400 boxes are expected to be distributed each week.

Des Moines City Council creates Food Security Task Force Tuesday, December 22, 2020 11:24 AM The Des Moines City Council created the Des Moines Food Security Task Force on Monday evening to address the needs of residents and encourage homegrown produce. The task force will follow top urban agriculture research, develop resource guides, provide recommendations and promote best practices to address food insecurity in Des Moines. The Food Security Task Force will be composed of seven members with the following backgrounds:  Three people with urban farm experience in Des Moines. One restaurant or other business owner who sources and uses local food. One person with experience caring for fruit and nut trees.

Alliant Energy, Hy-Vee partner to provide food boxes for families in Iowa communities Thursday, December 17, 2020 11:26 AM Alliant Energy is partnering with area Hy-Vee grocery stores to provide 1,000 food boxes for families in Burlington, Cedar Rapids/Marion, Clinton, Dubuque, Ottumwa, Marshalltown and Mason City, Alliant Energy announced this week. Four Oaks Family and Children Services is also distributing the boxes to families in family development, foster care and other programs. Each box includes a Hy-Vee gift certificate for fresh meat, seafood or dairy products. Alliant Energy is also distributing 1,000 food boxes with partners across Wisconsin.  Iowa Stops Hunger is a yearlong Business Publications Corp. initiative to bring awareness and action to food insecurity in Iowa.
